The best time to visit Cannes
September, if you want the honest answer. Here is the rest of the year for context.
We live here through all of it, including February, and the seasons on this coast are more distinct than the brochures suggest. The short version: September is the best month and almost nobody books it, May and June are excellent outside the festival weeks, and August is hot, full and expensive. Here is the year as it actually behaves.
September, the best month
The sea is at its warmest, having spent all summer heating up. The crowds have gone home with the school term. Restaurants that were impossible in August will give you a table. The light is long and gold. If you can choose any week of the year, choose one in September.
May and June
Warm, green and alive, with the hills still flowering. The sea is cool until late June. Two caveats: the Film Festival takes a fortnight in May and Cannes Lions takes a week in June, and in those weeks the town is full, the prices treble and a table is a negotiation. Either come for that, deliberately, or check the dates and avoid them.
July and August
Hot, busy and expensive. The beaches are full, the Croisette is a crawl and every restaurant needs booking. It is also when the sea is lovely and the evenings go on forever. Come if the dates are fixed by school holidays, and go to the Lérins islands or Théoule when the town gets too much.
October
Underrated. Still warm enough to eat outside, the sea is still swimmable early in the month, and the town belongs to the people who live in it again. MIPCOM fills one week.
November to March
Quiet and mild rather than cold, with brilliant clear days between the rain. Many beach restaurants close. This is the season for the hinterland, for Grasse and Mougins and the markets, and for having Le Suquet essentially to yourself. February brings the Menton lemon festival and the Nice carnival.
April
The coast wakes up. Everything reopens, the weather is unreliable and the prices have not yet climbed. A gamble that often pays.

November through March. It is mild rather than cold, many beach restaurants close, and the town belongs to residents again. Good for the old town, the markets and the hinterland.

The Film Festival fortnight in May, Cannes Lions in June, and the Yachting Festival in September if you are not there for them. The town fills, prices rise sharply and accommodation books out a year ahead.
Is the sea warm enough to swim in Cannes?
Comfortably from about mid-June to mid-October, warmest in late August and September. Hardy swimmers go in year round.
What is the weather like in Cannes in winter?
Mild and often bright, with sunny days between spells of rain. Cold enough for a coat in the evening, not cold enough to stop you eating lunch outside on a good day.
