Art

Six faces beneath the bay

Any morning · Île Sainte-Marguerite

Take the morning ferry from Quai Laubeuf, fifteen minutes across, and walk to Sainte-Marguerite’s south shore. A few metres down in glass-clear water wait six monumental sculpted faces. Bring a mask and fins; it costs nothing but the crossing.

Market

Marché Provençal, Antibes

Every morning in summer · Cours Masséna

Twenty five minutes along the coast, Antibes' covered market fills each morning with produce, flowers, spices and hot socca. Go before eleven, then wander the old town with a coffee.

Music

Jazz à Juan, 65th edition

9–19 Jul · Pinède Gould, Juan-les-Pins

One of Europe’s oldest jazz festivals, ten evenings of concerts under the umbrella pines beside the sea, about thirty minutes along the coast. This year’s bill runs from Tom Jones and Seal to Samara Joy, Marcus Miller and Herbie Hancock, with free Jammin' sessions in the Petite Pinède beforehand.

Music

Festival des Jeunes Talents

8–11 Jul · Le Suquet, old town

Four evenings of young musicians up in the old town, in the museum courtyard and on Place de la Castre beside the bell tower. One of the prettier places in Cannes to hear live music as the light goes.

Art & Galleries

La Malmaison, Centre d’art contemporain

Daily 10h–19h in summer · 47 La Croisette

The city’s contemporary art centre on the Croisette, reopened after a full restoration, showing modern and contemporary work from public and private collections. Finish on the rooftop at Café Olympe, with its view over the bay and the Lérins islands.

Art & Galleries

Le Suquet des Artistes

Daily 10h–18h in summer · 7 rue Saint-Dizier

An artists' residence and exhibition space in the heart of the medieval old town, given over to contemporary work by Cannes artists. A quiet, atmospheric stop between the port and the castle.

Exhibition

André Malraux, on Île Sainte-Marguerite

To 31 Oct · Musée du Masque de fer, Fort Royal

Out on the island, the Fort Royal marks fifty years since Malraux with a show on the museum in the digital age. Reason enough to take the little ferry across for the pines, the swimming coves and the fort itself.

Open-air cinema

Ciné Quartier

6, 13, 20 & 27 Jul · 22h · Around the city

Free open-air cinema that moves around Cannes through July, a different neighbourhood each Monday night. A big screen, deckchairs and a film once it is properly dark. Bring a cushion.

Makers' market

Les Allées des Créateurs

Sat 11 Jul · 18h–23h · Free · Allées de la Liberté

An evening market of makers and artisans along the Allées de la Liberté, closing with a DJ set. Free to wander, and an easy browse before dinner in the old town.

Comedy

Five evenings of French stand-up in the gardens of the Villa Rothschild, a relaxed early-evening slot before dinner. Book ahead.

Guided walk · French

Fireworks

Festival d’Art Pyrotechnique

From Sat 4 Jul · ~22h · Baie de Cannes

The summer’s great fireworks competition opens on 4 July and runs across several nights through the season, each entry set to music over the bay. Watched free from the Croisette, the beaches or up at Le Suquet. Arrive early for a spot on the sand.

Festive party

Bal des Fous

12, 19 & 26 Jul · 16h–23h30 · Palais rooftop

A joyfully over-the-top afternoon party on the Palais rooftop terrace across three Sundays, music, costumes and sea views from late afternoon into the night. More spectacle than club night.

Nothing in this category just now. Try another.
